31st July:

Insects: A Barred Straw, 2 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 2 Rosy Rustic, Eudonia murana, Endothenia quadrimaculana, Agonopterix nervosa, 2 Pyrausta despicata and another Pyrausta purpuralis were trapped in South Glendale last night.

30th July:

Lewis: A Rose-coloured Starling was seen in North Tolsta today.

North Uist: A sub-adult Pomarine Skua was seen heading south from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry today (1/2 hour out of Lochmaddy)

South Uist: A Great Northern Diver, 65 Gannets, 37 Manx Shearwaters (58 N), 2 Great Skuas, 1 Whimbrel and 1 Greenshank flew south off Ardvule in the morning. The Pectoral Sandpiper was still at Ardvule.

Marine Sightings: A Minke Whale was seen just north-east of the lighthouse at the Butt today.

29th July:

North Uist: 7 Black-tailed Godwits and 35 Knot were at Grenitote. A Sandwich Tern was in Loch Euphort.

South Uist: A Pectoral Sandpiper was at Ardvule today.

28th July:

North Uist: 2 juvenile Ruff and an adult Curlew Sandpiper were at Traigh Leathann, Baleshare this morning.

Insects: 262 moths/50 species were caught in South Glendale last night including a Triple-spotted Clay, 3 Rustic, 3 Lempke's Gold Spot, Dark Spinach, 2 Scotch Annulet and a Minor Shoulder-knot; while micro moths included a Pyrausta purpuralis, Agriphila selasella, Aphelia paleana, Scoparia ambigualis, 2 Eudonia pallida, 2 Eana penziana and 2 Eucosma hohenwartiana.

27th July:

Harris: The adult Rose-coloured Starling is still at Huisinish. A drake Surf Scoter was seen in the Sound of Taransay.

St. Kilda: 2 Rose-coloured Starlings were in Village Bay, Hirta.

 

26th July:

Harris: The adult Rose-coloured Starling is still at Huisinish.

North Uist: The Greenland White-fronted Goose is still at Balranald. 16 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Bhrusda, Berneray this afternoon.

South Uist: A Sandwich Tern flew south at Frobost.

Insects: 160 moths/39 species were caught in South Glendale last night including 3 Scarce Silver Y, 1 Haworth's Minor, 1 Double Square-spot, 1 Brimstone Moth, 1 Red Carpet, 3 White-line Darts and micros Zeiraphera ratzeburgiana, 3 Eana osseana, Eupoecilia angustana and Pyrausta despicata.

25th July:

North Uist: A Grey Wagtail was seen at Ardnastruban, Grimsay today.

Benbecula: 33 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Mor this morning.

South Uist: 66 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River. Birds heading south at Ardvule included 424 Gannets, 29 Manx Shearwater, 1 Storm Petrel, 5 Fulmars, 110 Auks sp., 104 Razorbills, 4 Guillemots, 1 Black Guillemot, 4 Kittiwakes and 4 Greenshank.

Barra: The Rose-coloured Starling is still at Borve.

 

24th July:

Harris: The Rose-coloured Starling was seen at Huisinish.

St. Kilda: A Rose-coloured Starling was seen in the village on Hirta today.

North Uist: The Snowy Owl was seen on the sands off Grenitote picnic site this morning.

South Uist: 3 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Hallan.

 

23rd July:

North Uist: The Snowy Owl was seen at Grenitote this morning and still present this afternoon (video here).

Benbecula: A Pink-footed Goose was at Loch Mor.

South Uist: A Brent Goose was on Loch Bee.

22nd July:

North Uist: A Greenland White-fronted Goose was at Balranald.

South Uist: A juvenile Mediterranean Gull flew south at Ardvule this morning; also 57 Gannets, 11 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Storm Petrel, 5 Puffins, 1 Razorbill and 7 Auk sp. also flew south there

21st July:

Insects: 50 species of moths were trapped in Carinish last night including a Scarce Silver-Y and Evergestis pallidata. 50 species were also trapped in South Glendale which included a Double-striped Pug, 2 Small Rivulets, 1 Chestnut-coloured Carpet, 1 Scotch Annulet, 1 Pinion-streaked Snout, 3 Gillmeria pallidactyla, Aphelia paleana and Endothenia quadrimaculana. On Eriskay 51 species were caught which included Gold Spangle, 2 Northern Rustic, 3 Scotch Annulet, 41 Pretty Pinion, 11 Grass Rivulet, 1 Treble-bar, 11 Rustic, 1 Silver Y, 1 Chevron, 2 Endothenia quadrimaculana, 1 Scrobipalpa samadensisEudonia mercurella, 6 Cnephasia conspersana, 3 Eana penziana and 5 Pyrausta despicata.

20th July:

North Uist: The 2nd summer Glaucous Gull was still at Aird an Runair. The Snowy Owl was reported yesterday at Grenitote.

South Uist: The immature Glaucous Gull is still on the golf course at Askernish.

 

19th July:

South Uist: An immature Glaucous Gull and 3 Whimbrel were at Askernish. 2 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Hallan.

Barra: The Rose-coloured Starling was at Borve again today.

 

18th July:

Harris: A Rose-coloured Starling was at Huisinish.

North Uist: A Sandwich Tern was in Lochmaddy Harbour this morning. The 2nd summer Glaucous Gull is still at Aird an Runair. 15 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Sandary.

Barra: The Rose-coloured Starling was seen at Borve again today.

 

17th July:

North Uist: A Rose-coloured Starling was seen at Baymore, Grimsay today. A Whimbrel flew south over Carinish this afternoon.

 

16th July:

North Uist: The 2nd summer Glaucous Gull is still at Aird an Runair.

15th July:

Lewis: 57 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Stiapabhat this evening.

North Uist: The Snowy Owl was seen at Sollas this afternoon.

Benbecula: An adult Little Gull was seen in Stinky Bay this morning.

South Uist: Birds south at Ardvule this morning included 2 Great Northern Divers, 1 Black-throated Diver, 118 Gannets, 3 Fulmars, 45 Manx Shearwaters, 6 Storm Petrels, 10 Razorbills, 1 Guillemot, 8 Puffins, 13 Auk sp., and 1 Great Skua; also a single Whimbrel present. A juvenile Siskin was in South Glendale.

Barra: A Redwing was seen at Garrygall today.

 

14th July:

South Uist: 1 Black-throated Diver, 43 Gannets, 7 Fulmars, 12 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Storm Petrels, 1 Arctic Skua and a Whimbrel flew south at Ardvule this morning. Also 65 Arctic Terns flew south as well as up to 40 at times feeding over Loch Ardvule, most of these latter birds 1st and 2nd summer birds.

13th July:

Lewis: A Sooty Shearwater and 17 Manx Shearwaters flew west off the Butt in a 2 hour watch this morning.

St. Kilda: The female Snowy Owl was seen on Hirta again this evening.

North Uist: A Rose-coloured Starling was seen on Grimsay near Scotvein Bay today. A Little Stint and 2nd summer Glaucous Gull were seen on the shore at Aird an Runair today.

Insects: 780 moths and 65 species were trapped in Carinish last night including a female Ghost Moth, 16 Pretty Pinions, 9 Light Emerald, an Archer's Dart, a Lemke's Gold Spot, Pinion-streaked Snout and a Brown China Mark amongst many others. 530 moths / 36 species were trapped on Daliburgh machair including 341 Pretty Pinioins, 2 Barred Rivulet, 25 Archer's Dart and 1 Eudonia murana, 1 Falseuncaria ruficiliana, 22 Bryotropha terrella, 1 Celypha striana, 2 Gynnidomorpha permixtana and 3 Phycitodes saxicola. In South Glendale 224 moths / 54 species were caught including a Double Square-spot, Northern Spinach, a Common Wave, 4 Purple Clay, a Gothic, 2 Scarce Silver Y, 1 Matilella fusca, 1 Argyresthia goedartella, 1 Gillmeria pallidactyla, and a Delplanqueia dilutella amongst many others.

Marine Sightings: 6 Bottle-nosed Dolphins and 20 Common Dolphins were seen off the Butt of Lewis this morning.

12th July:

South Uist: A 2nd summer Glaucous Gull was at Loch Hallan today; also 4 Black-tailed Godwits.

11th July:

Lewis: An adult Rose-coloured Starling was on the beach near Battery Point, Stornoway this afternoon. 3 Sooty Shearwaters, 46 Manx Shearwaters, 32 Puffins and 9 Black Guillemots flew west past the Butt (16:00 - 17:00)

North Uist: The Snowy Owl was reported from near Carinish this evening.

South Uist: A dark-bellied Brent Goose was with Greylags on Loch Bee today.

Barra: An adult Long-tailed Skua flew inland (west) over the road at Bolnabodach today. The Rose-coloured Starling was at Borve.

 

10th July:

South Uist: A few birds north at Ardvule included 168 Gannets, 16 Fulmars, 184 Manx Shearwaters, 10 Storm Petrels, 32 Puffins and a Great Skua. 

Barra: The adult Rose-coloured Starling is still at Borve.

Marine Sightings: A breaching Minke Whale was seen from the Barra - Oban ferry: see external link to photos on twitter.

 

9th July:

St. Kilda: The female Snowy Owl was on Hirta again today and yesterday evening; also a mobile Little Bunting was seen there.

Barra: The adult Rose-coloured Starling was still at Borve. An adult Sabine's Gull was on the beach at Cleat briefly before flying out to sea where it spend the afternoon offshore before flying off to the north-east.

Insects: 142 moths /43 species were caught in South Glendale last night including a Small Rivulet, Platyptilia gonodactyla, 2 Aethes rubigana, 2 Eucosma hohenwartiana, Eudonia murana and 2 Eana osseana.

8th July:

North Uist: The 2nd summer Glaucous Gull is still at Balranald.

South Uist: 14 Storm Petrels were seen off Ardvule this morning.

Barra: The Rose-coloured Starling was seen at Borve again today. A Long-tailed Skua was off Brevig for a short while late evening before flying south; also 2 Sandwich Terns off there too.

7th July:

At Sea: A Lapland Bunting was seen on board a boat 40 nautical miles north of North Rona today.

North Uist: A Snowy Owl was seen between Carinish and Loch Euphort along the Hebridean Way.

Insects: 110 moths / 38 species were trapped in South Glendale last night including 1 Scarce Silver Y, 1 Heart & Dart, 2 Common Footman, Gillmeria pallidactyla, Eucosma hohenwartiana, 2 Catoptria margaritella and Argyresthia conjugella.

6th July:

Lewis: 2 Sooty Shearwaters were seen at sea today, 40 miles north of Lewis.

South Uist: 3 Black-tailed Godwits were at Kilaulay and 2 were on the Howmore River. A juvenile Siskin was in South Glendale today.

Insects: 49 species of moths were trapped in Carinish last night including a Dotted Rustic and Small Angle Shades.

5th July:

Barra: The Rose-coloured Starling is still at Borve where it's normally feeding around the cattle.

Insects: Moth trapping at North Loch Eynort last night produced 170 moths / 33 species including a Peppered Moth, Gold Swift, Clouded Border, 3 Coxcomb Prominent, 3 Riband Wave, 74 Mottled Beauty, 3 Barred Red, 11 Light Emerald and 15 Pandemis cerasana. 2 Wood Tigers were seen in South Glendale today as well as 3 Aphelia viburnana and a Glyphipterix thrasonella. 2 Emerald Damselflies were seen in South Uist also today.

4th July:

Insects: Trapping on the moor at Druidibeg last night. produced 18 Drinkers, 17 True Lover's Knots, 7 Chestnut-coloured Carpets and a Scotch Annulet. A brief walk around area early this morning produced 170 Bactra lancealana, 1 Aphelia viburnana, 15 Crambus pascuella, 2 Bryotropha politella, 1 Bryotropha terrella, 1 Coleophora taeniipennella and a Brown China-mark.

3rd July:

St. Kilda: The female Snowy Owl was still on Hirta today.

South Uist: 4 Crossbills were at North Loch Eynort this morning. A Crossbill was in South Glendale this morning before flying off south. A female Blackcap was in Askernish.

Insects: 9 Mottled Beauty, 1 Grey Scalloped Bar, 1 Gold Spot, 14 Straw Dot, 2 Yellow Shell, 1 Grey Mountain Carpet, Phiaris schulziana and Delplanqueia dilutella were caught in South Glendale last night.

Marine Sightings: Basking Shark, Minke Whale, Harbour Porpoise, Bottle-nosed Dolphin and Common Dolphins were seen off Leanish, Barra today.

2nd July:

South Uist: At Ardvule a Great Skua flew north whilst species flying south included 59 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Puffins and a Little Tern. A Curlew Sandpiper was also present with the Redshanks. A female Blackcap was in Askernish.
