30th June:

North Uist: A Rose-coloured Starling was seen at Ardnastruban guesthouse, Grimsay this morning.

South Uist: Southerly movement at Ardvule included 86 Gannets, 1 imm Great Northern Diver (+ad.sum N), 7 Fulmars, 569 Manx Shearwater, 14 Storm Petrels, 79 Auks sp., 20 Razorbills, 5 Guillemots, 97 Puffins, 16 Kittiwakes, 2 Great Skuas and 2 Swifts.

Marine Sightings: 2 Harbour Porpoise were seen close inshore at Ardvule in the morning.

 

29th June:

North Uist: A Hobby was hunting around Clettreval early afternoon before flying east.

Insects: 20 Painted Ladies, 1 Silver Y, 18 Grass Rivulet, 25 Common Carpet, 160 Chrysoteuchia culmella, 1 Celypha striana, 1 Celypha cespitana, 1 Aethes rubigana,  1 Epiblema costipunctana, 1 Micropterix aruncella and Elachista argentella were seen on Daliburgh machair today.

28th June:

South Uist: 4 Swifts flew south at Ardvule in the afternoon.

Insects: Moth trapped at Druidibeg last night included 4 Pebble Prominent, 1 Buff-tip, 1 Snout, 1 Poplar Hawk-moth, 4 July Highflyers, 2 Light Emerald, 2 Mottled Beauty and a Phiaris schulziana. A spell of netting at the same location early this morning produced 2 Bactra lancealana, 1 Anania fuscalis, 12 Argyresthia pygmaeella, 6 Argyresthia retinella, 3 Phyllonorycter hilarella, 2 Pleurota bicostella and 3 Coleophora pyrrhulipennella.

27th June:

Lewis: A juvenile Brambling was trapped in Uigen.

Insects: 159 moths/42 species were trapped in South Glendale last night which include a Northern Eggar, 20 Buff Ermine, Heart & Dart, Grey Mountain Carpet, 2 July Highflyers, 7 Green Carpets, 2 Snout, Purple Clay, 4 Campion, 4 Drinkers and micros Elachista argentella, 3 Eucosma campoliliana, 6 Notocelia uddmanniana and Matilella fusca.

26th June:

South Uist: 3 Siskins were in South Glendale.

25th June:

Lewis: A Stone Curlew on machair south of sports centre at Eoropie, Ness this morning.

St. Kilda: The female Snowy Owl was seen on Hirta yesterday.

South Uist: A Spotted Flycatcher was in South Glendale.

Marine Sightings: 5 Killer Whales (a male, 2 females and 2 youngsters) were seen heading north off Tiumpan Head this afternoon.

23rd June:

North Uist: A Rose-coloured Starling and a Quail were at Balranald, near the car park at Aird an Runair this morning. A 2nd cal yr Glaucous Gull was at Rubh' Arnal.

Benbecula: A drake Garganey was on Coot Loch and a Sandwich Tern was on Loch Mor.

Barra: A Common Rosefinch was seen at Armdhor Plantation this morning. The 2nd cal yr Iceland Gull was at Craigston.

Insects: The following moths were caught at Carnan last night: Brimstone 1, Buff Ermine 7, Clouded Bordered Brindle 2, Drinker Moth 7, Elephant Hawkmoth 1, flame Shoulder 1, Fox Moth 4, Green Carpet 4, Knot Grass 1, Light Emerald 3, Map Winged Swift 1, Mottled Beauty 1, Pebble Prominent 3, Polar Hawkmoth 4, Riband Wave 1, Silver Ground Carpet 28, Small Angle Shades 1, Small Square Spot 3, Straw Dot 2, Campion 2, Magpie 1, Snout 7, Spectacle 5, White Ermine 2.

 

22nd June:

North Uist: A Curlew Sandpiper was still at Aird an Runair, Balranald this morning although no sign of the Blyth's Reed Warbler. A Quail was seen at Balranald, near the campsite in the evening.

Benbecula: 66 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Mor.

21st June:

Lewis: 2 Swifts were over Garrabost today.

North Uist: A Blyth's Reed Warbler was singing (recording here) occasionally by the visitor centre at Balranald today. A Curlew Sandpiper was also seen nearby at Aird an Runair.

20th June:

Lewis: A Quail was flushed from a croft in Garrabost today.

Harris: 3 Whooper Swans were seen in Seilebost.

North Uist: A male Siskin was in Sollas today.

Benbecula: 7 Black-tailed Godwits were at Coot Loch.

South Uist: Birds flying south today at Ardvule were 3 Great Northern Divers, 1 Red-throated Diver, 125 Gannets (+48N), 2 Fulmars (+4N), 35 Manx Shearwaters, 2 Arctic Skuas, 2 Great Skuas, 23 Kittiwakes, 1 Puffin, 2 Black Guillemots, 53 Auk sp., 67 Razorbills and 58 Guillemots.

19th June:

South Uist: Birds south at Ardvule today were 111 Gannets, 2 Fulmars, 142 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Storm Petrels, 44 Auks sp., 12 Guillemots, 45 Razorbills, 5 Puffins, 22 Kittiwakes, 1 Great Skua while 3 Great Northern Divers flew north. A Spotted Flycatcher was at North Loch Eynort.

18th June:

Lewis: A 2nd summer Mediterranean Gull was at Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: A Swift was seen over Scotvein, Grimsay late afternoon.

South Uist: An Avocet was seen flying around at the north end of Loch Bee this evening before landing on Clachan Pools at Balgarva. Birds south at Ardvule today included 134 Gannets, 28 Fulmars, 479 Manx Shearwaters, 25 Storm Petrels, 196 Auks sp., 1 Black Guillemot, 57 Razorbills, 23 Guillemots, 54 Puffins, 1 Great Skua and 4 Kittiwakes.

Barra: A Swift flew over Cleat and the 2nd cal yr Iceland Gull was at Craigston.

17th June:

North Uist: A Rose-coloured Starling and a Lesser Whitethroat were in Carinish this afternoon. A Curlew Sandpiper was at Aird an Runair this morning.

South Uist: A Surf Scoter and a White-billed Diver flew south at Ardvule this morning; also 67 Gannets, 2 Great Northern Divers, 1 Red-throated Diver, 2 Fulmars (+4 N), 87 Manx Shearwaters, 5 Storm Petrels, 63 Auk sp., 10 Razorbills, 5 Guillemots, 1 Black Guillemot, 6 Kittiwakes, 1 Arctic Skua and 21 Common Scoter.

16th June:

North Uist: 165 Bar-tailed Godwits and 46 Sanderling were at Griminish Harbour today. An adult Sabine's Gull was seen from the Uig - Lochmaddy ferry this evening (around half away across the Minch). A male Ruff was seen at Balranald.

Barra: The Great Tit was at Ardveenish.

Insects: A Small Heath was seen at Carnan.

15th June:

Lewis: 2 Tree Sparrows were in Islibhig today.

South Uist: A drake Scaup is at Frobost. Birds flying north at Ardvule this morning included 62 Gannets, 81 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Fulmars, 34 Auks sp (+ 36 S) and 5 Great Northern Divers (+ 1 S).

Insects: 73 moths/23 species were caught in South Glendale last night incluingd a Drinker, Poplar Hawk-moth, 9 Broom Moths, 2 Heart & Dart, 2 True Lover’s Knot, 4 Knot Grass, 4 Dusky Brocade, 1 Pale-shouldered Brocade, 1 Clouded-bordered Brindle, 7 Narrow-winged Pugs, 1 Green Carpet and a Purple Bar.

14th June:

Lewis: The Tree Sparrow is still in Port of Ness.

North Uist: The drake Ring-necked Duck was still on Loch na Revil, Hougharry this morning.

South Uist: Birds flying north at Ardvule this morning included 38 Gannets, 1 Red-throated Diver, 4 Fulmars, 7 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Great Skua, 17 Puffins and 67 Auks sp. while 2 Great Northern Divers and 3 Storm Petrels flew south. A Little Stint and Whimbrel were still present.

Barra: The 2nd cal yr Iceland Gull was at Craigston. A Grey Wagtail was at Creachan and another was in Northbay.

Marine Sightings: A Minke Whale was seen off the Butt of Lewis this afternoon.

13th June:

Lewis: A Tree Sparrow was in Port of Ness today.

South Uist: 62 Gannets, 2 Red-throated Divers, 2 Storm Petrels, 13 Fulmars, 14 Razorbills, 2 Guillemots, 58 Auk sp., 2 Kittiwakes and 3 Great Skuas flew north at Ardvule this morning while an Arctic Skua few south. The Little Stint was akso still present. A late report of a Waxwing on the beach near the Politician Pub in Eriskay from yesterday.

Barra: A Hawfinch was at Glen today; also 3 Spotted Flycatchers were on the island.

12th June:

Lewis: Ullapool - Stornoway ferry produced 6 Storm Petrels and 10+ Manx Shearwaters amongst many other auks etc. 3 House Martins were at Loch Stiapabhat. A Storm Petrel was feeding close inshore off Port of Ness this evening.

North Uist: A Little Stint was seen at Middlequarter. The drake Ring-necked Duck was at Loch na Reivil this morning.

South Uist: Birds flying north at Ardvule included 1 Red-throated Diver, 32 Gannets, 116 Fulmars, 9 Auks, 4 Razorbills and 1 Arctic Skua. Birds flying south included 1 Great Northern Diver, 2 Manx Shearwaters and 37 Gannets. A Little Stint was in the south bay.

Barra: A Hawfinch flew over Northbay.

Marine Sightings: 5 Minke Whales, Ca. 100 Common Dolphins and lots of Harbour Porpoise were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today.

11th June:

10th June:

North Uist: A drake Ring-necked Duck was at Loch na Reivil.

South Uist: A male Red-breasted Flycatcher was singing at North Loch Eynort today; also a Spotted Flycatcher there. An Osprey was at Loch Druidibeg. 2 Great Northern Divers (1 south) and 5 Storm Petrels flew north at Ardvule this morning.

Barra: The Purple Heron was seen at Loch an Ali, Bolnabodach today.

 

9th June:

North Uist: A Curlew Sandpiper was at Aird an Runair. A Quail was calling from the north side of Loch nam Feithean.

South Uist: A Spotted Flycatcher was at North Loch Eynort.

Barra: The Purple Heron was seen at Loch an Ali, Bolnabodach today.

Insects: An Argent & Sable moth was seen in South Glendale.

Lewis: A Little Egret was at Ardroil.

North Uist: A Little Stint was at Loch Paible. A male Ruff was at Loch Sandary.

South Uist: The Osprey was seen at Loch Druidibeg again today.

Barra: A male Whinchat was at Brevig. 4 Spotted Flycatchers were on the island. The Iceland Gull was at Craigston.

Insects: 145 moths / 30 species were caught in South Glendale last night 145 moths/30 species which included 9 Grey Scalloped Bar, single Poplar Hawk-moth and Elephant Hawk-moth, 1 Drinker, 17 Broom Moths, 2 Buff-tip, 3 Fox Moth, 3 Spectacle, 9 Flame Shoulder, 7 Clouded-bordered Brindle, 3 Foxglove Pug, 1 Common Pug, 3 Satyr Pug, 4 Grey Pug, 5 Narrow-winged Pug, 10 Shears, 9 Knot Grass, 2 Heart & Dart and micros Monopis weaverella, Crambus lathoniellus, Anania fuscalis and Neofaculta ericetella.  At North Loch Eynort 69 moths / 25 species were trapped which included 2 Barred Red, 6 Common White Waves, 3 Green Carpet, 3 May Highflyer, 1 Clouded Border, 2 Scalloped Hazel, 6 Common Pug, 1 Satyr Pug, 4 Foxglove Pugs, 1 Grey Pug, 4 Grey Pine Carpet, 3 Spectacle, 3 Coxcomb Prominent, 1 Buff Tip, 11 Brimstone Moths, 7 Poplar Hawk-moths and 3 Poplar Lutestring.

South Uist: A Spotted Flycatcher was at Nort Loch Eynort.

 

6th June:

North Uist: 6 Storm Petrels were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry this afternoon.

South Uist: The Little Egret was at the north end of Loch Bee again today.

Barra: A Spotted Flycatcher was at Eoligarry. A Grey Wagtail was at Creachan. The Iceland Gull was at Craigston.

Marine Sightings: At least 7 Common Dolphins were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry this afternoon.

 

5th June:

South Uist: 2 Great Northern Divers flew north at Ardvule this morning and 4 Whimbrel were present. A male Blackcap is singing at Druidibeg plantation and the Osprey was seen nearby again this morning. A Little Egret was at the north end of Loch Bee. A Black-tailed Godwit was at Frobost. 2 Whimbrel and 150 Bar-tailed Godwits were at Ardivachar.

Barra: The Pied Flycatcher was at Creachan and the Tree Sparrow was at Brevig. The 2 cy Iceland Gull was at Craigston.

Marine Sightings: 5 Basking Sharks were seen off the north-east coast of Eriskay today.

4th June:

Lewis: An American Golden Plover was at Loch Ordais this morning; also a Red-necked Phalarope, a Grey Plover, 4 Whimbrel and 2 Goldeneye were in the area. A Pink-footed Goose was at Arnol.

North Uist: A Glaucous Gull was seen at Balemore but no sign of the Calandra Lark at nearby Knickintorran.

South Uist: A Spotted Flycatcher was in Askernish.

Barra: A Pied Flycatcher was at Creachan and an Iceland Gull was at Craigston. A Tree Sparrow was at Brevig.

3rd June:

North Uist: A Calandra Lark is on the machair at Knockintorran, Paible, NF726675 (video here). The bird was mobile but apperntly sticking to this rough area. 6 Long-tailed Skuas flew north off Aird an Runair between 09:25 - 10:55 this morning. A Curlew Sandpiper was there this evening. A House Martin was seen at Cheese Bay.

Benbecula: The 1st yr Mediterranean Gull was in Stinky Bay late this afternoon.

South Uist: Southerly passage at Ardvule included 3 Common Scoter, 1 Great Northern Diver (2 N), 148 Gannets (53 N), 73 Fulmar (6 N), 283 Manx Shearwater, 47 Kittiwakes, 3 Great Skuas, 210 Auk sp. (4 N), 11 Puffins, 1 Black Guillemot, 92 Razorbills, 81 Guillemots and a Grey Plover.

Lewis: A pair of Garganey and a Curlew Sandpiper were at Loch Stiapabhat. 3 House Martins were at the Butt.

North Uist: 3 Barnacle Geese were on Vallay.

Benbecula: 60 Black-tailed Godwits dropped in at Loch Mor in the evening; also a Ruff there. A House Martin was nearby.

South Uist: At Ardvule this morning a southerly passage of 37 Gannets (+23 N), 1 Great Northern Diver (+1 N), 1 Red-throated Divers (+3 N), 2 Fulmars (+6 N), 5 Manx Shearwaters (+21 N), 3 Storm Petrels, 112 Auk sp. (+ 20 N), 156 Razorbills, 48 Guillemots, 9 Puffins, 1 Arctic Skua N, 1 Great Skua N and 16 Kittiwakes (+ 7 N). A 1st yr Mediterranean Gull was at Peninerine. A Black-tailed Godwit was on Loch Bee. 7 Whimbrel were at Ardvule. An Osprey was seen at Loch Druidibeg again today.
