31st October:

South Uist: The juvenile American Golden Plover is still at Bornish. Seawatching from Ardvule (0715 – 1340) produced 852 Gannets, 41 Great Northern Divers, 11 Red-throated Divers, 1 Fulmar, 54 Sooty Shearwaters, 474 Guillemots, 11 Razorbills, 598 Auks sp, 3 Black Guillemots, 2 Common Scoter, 19 Long-tailed Duck, 4 Mergansers, 487 Kittiwakes and 1 juvenile Arctic Tern while a juvenile Glaucous Gull flew North. 2 male Blackcaps were in South Glendale.

Barra: The Yellow-browed Warbler is still by the football pitch in Castle Bay.

30th October:

South Uist: Southerly passage at Ardvule (0720-1015) included 169 Gannets, 15 Great Northern Divers, 8 Red-throated Divers, 269 Guillemots, 9 Razorbills, 78 Auk sp, 11 Long-tailed Duck while 6 Sooty Shearwaters flew north. Also 2 Jack Snipe (one flew in off sea) while a juvenile male Scaup on Loch Ardvule. 3 Blackcaps (2 males and a female) were in South Glendale today.

Barra: A Firecrest was in Castle Bay. 6 Pomarine Skuas and 14 Sooty Shearwaters flew past Brevig today.

 

29th October:

Lewis: 640 Fieldfare passed over Port of Ness heading south-west along with 235 Redwings. 30 Snow Buntings and 3 Bramblings were also present. A Wheatear, 90 Blackbirds, 15 Redwings and 5 Fieldfare were at the Butt.

North Uist: 12 Fieldfare at Carinish this morning and a couple of White-fronted Geese heading south-east over the North Ford.

South Uist: Ardvule (0720-1115) produced a southerly passage of 317 Gannets, 26 Great Northern Divers, 11 Red-throated Divers, 12 Fulmars, 228 Sooty Shearwaters, 16 Greenland White-fronted Geese, 1 Scaup, 10 Long-tailed Ducks, 1 Common Scoter, a female Velvet Scoter, 316 Guillemots, 7 Razorbills, 314 Auks sp, 51 Kittiwakes, 3 Grey Plover. Also 3 Goldeneye flew north. A male Blackcap was in South Glendale.

Barra: 108 Sooty Shearwaters flew past Cleat (11:10 - 12:10) and a Snow Bunting was at Greian Head. A Yellow-browed Warbler and Firecrest were in Castle Bay.

Marine Sightings: At least 2 Bottle-nosed Dolphins were off Ardvule this morning.

28th October:

Lewis: A Barred Warbler was in Eoropie today.

North Uist: 600+ Fieldfare and around 200 Redwings dropped into Carinish briefly late morning; also a male Blackcap present.

South Uist: At Ardvule (0730-1005) a southerly passage included 44 Wigeon, 7 Long-tailed Duck and a female Common Scoter while a Snow Bunting and 39 Redwing came in off the sea. A juvenile male Scaup was on Loch Ardvule. The juvenile American Golden Plover was at Bornish and 210 Whooper Swans were between Bornish and Kildonan. A female / immature Pochard was on West Loch Ollay along with 3 Pink-footed Geese. 5 Greenland Redpolls were at Kildonan and several hundred Redwings were around the Bornish / Ormiclate area.

Insects: Trapping in South Glendale last night produced 20 moths of 11 species: 1 Dark Arches, 3 Angle Shades, 1 Red Sword-grass, 2 Silver Y, 2 Rosy Rustic, 4 Small Wainscot and micro moths Caloptilia stigmatella, Agonopterix yeatiana, Agonopterix ocellana, 2 Agonopterix heracliana and 2 Agonopterix subpropinquella (both f.rhodochrella).

 

27th October:

North Uist: 62 Barnacle Geese flew south-east over Carinish this evening.

South Uist: Ardvule this morning (0720 – 1045) produced a southerly passage of 157 Gannets, 56 Great Northern Divers, 9 Red-throated Divers, 136 Whooper Swans, 302 Barnacle Geese, 3 Long-tailed Duck, 3 Purple Sandpipers, 116 Kittiwakes, 54 Black-headed Gulls and 1 Merlin in off sea. Single injured Black-tailed Godwit present Loch Ardvule. The American Golden Plover still with Golden Plover flock on Bornish machair. A Pied Flycatcher, Brambling and Fieldfare were at Druidibeg this afternoon. 44 Whooper Swans and 85 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east over Bornish late afternoon plus 100 Whooper Swans on loch around Bornish / Kildonan. A Fieldfare and 70 Redwings were in Bornish early morning.

Insects: Red Admirals were seen in South Glendale and near loch Carnan today.

26th October:

North Uist: 24 Whooper Swans were resting on Baleshare in the strong southerly winds.

South Uist: Seawatching at Ardvule (0755 – 0940) produced a southerly passage of 22 Great Northern Divers, 6 Red-throated Divers, 2 Wigeon, 6 Pintail, 7 Long-tailed Duck 37 Guillemots, 4 Razorbills and 17 Auks sp. The juv American Golden Plover on Bornish machair.

25th October:

South Uist: Seawatching at Ardvule (0715 – 1150) produced a southerly passage of 99 Gannets, 32 Great Northern Divers, 3 Red-throated Divers, 36 Guillemots, 5 Razorbills, 21 Auk sp, 4 Long-tailed Duck, 16 Scaup, 62 Tufted Duck and also 13 Whooper Swans in off sea. The juvenile American Golden Plover was still in the fields near the church at Bornish.

Barra: A juvenile Iceland Gull was at Craigston today.

 

24th October:

South Uist: Seawatching at Ardvule today, (0820-1045 & 1615-1805) produced a southerly passage of 95 Gannets, 40 Great Northern Divers, 4 Red-throated Divers, 98 Guillemots, 124 Auks sp, 3 Wigeon, 9 Teal, 39 Scaup, 5 Long-tailed Duck, 5 pale-bellied Brent Geese, 69 Golden Plover, 155 Kittiwakes, 1 Arctic Tern (juvenile) and a Snow Bunting. 15 - 20 Snow Buntings were on Ormiclate machair. 40 Redwing were in Snishval plantation. 40 Brent Geese were on the South Ford.

 

23rd October:

Barra: A Little Bunting was in Castle Bay this morning.

22nd October:

South Uist: At Ardvule (0810 – 1200) a southerly passage of 9 Red-throated Divers, 54 Great Northern Divers, 14 Gannets, 3 Leach's Petrels, 8 Black Guillemots, 22 Kittiwakes, 3 Pomarine Skuas, 1 Great Skua and 2 Long-tailed Ducks.

21st October:

South Uist: An American Golden Plover is on Bornish machair. At Ardvule (0815 – 1100) a southerly passage of 244 Gannets, 32 Great Northern Divers, 5 Red-throated Divers, 2 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 110 Guillemots, 9 Razorbills, 66 Auks sp, 26 Kittiwakes, 3 Long-tailed Duck and 118 Barnacle Geese. 100 Goldfinch were at Daliburgh.

20th October:

Lewis: A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Eoropie today. 76 Barnacle Geese flew south-west past the Butt. 100 Redwings were in Port of Ness.

South Uist: 47 Goldfinch were in Stilligarry today. Southerly movement at Ardvule this morning included 33 Great Northern Divers, 6 Red-throated Divers, 2 Long-tailed Duck, 51 Guillemots, 3 Razorbills, 21 Auks sp and 35 Barnacle Geese.

Marine Sightings: 2 Bottle-nosed Dolphins were also seen off Ardvule.

 

19th October:

Lewis: A Yellow-browed Warbler and a Jack Snipe were at the Butt today.

North Uist: 14 pale-bellied Brent Geese were near Rubh' Arnal.

South Uist: 30 Goldfinch were seen at Stilligarry today.

Insects: 26 moths of 14 species were trapped in South Glendale last night and included single Red-line Quaker, Large Wainscot, Silver Y, 2 Brindled Ochre, 10 Small Wainscot and a very late Narrow-winged Pug. Micro moths included 2 Rush Veneer, 1 Bee Moth, 1 Epinotia caprana, 2 Acleris variegana, 1 Caloptilia stigmatella, and an Agonopterix subpropinquella form. rhodochrella. At North Loch Eynort 30 moths of 14 species were trapped and included a Red Sword-grass, Lesser Yellow Underwing, 21 Grey Pine Carpet, 1 Autumn Green Carpet and micros Agonopterix ocellana and Caloptilia stigmatella.

18th October:

Lewis: 4 Pomarine Skuas were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry this morning.

Benbecula: 3 Swallows were in Balivanich this afternoon.

South Uist: 6 Pale-bellied Brent at Smerclate and another two at Garrynamonie. A Tree Sparrow, Yellow-browed Warbler, 12 Fieldfare and 40 Redwing were in South Glendale. An imm Ring ouzel, 30 Fieldfare and 150 Redwings were at Druidibeg. A single Fieldfare and Chiffchaff were at Snishival. 2 Blackcaps and 2 Woodcock were at North loch Eynort. A Jack Snipe was by Loch Stilligarry.

Barra: An Olive-backed Pipit was at Brevig today.

17th October:

Lewis: The Wilson's Warbler is still in Port of Ness and has been showing well intermittently throughout the afternoon. Also a Greenald Redpoll, Garden Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler and Chiffchaff. A Barred Warbler was in scrub just north of Borve Pottery.

South Uist: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Boisdale House. A Siskin and Cihffchaff were at North Loch Eynort.

Insects: A Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell were seen at Boisdale House this morning.

16th October:

Lewis: The Wilson's Warbler is still present this morning and seen intermittently throughout the day; a Yellow-browed Warbler was also present. 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were seen at Gisla this afternoon.

Harris: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Amhuinnsuidhe today.

North Uist: At least 20 Whooper Swans flew south over the North Ford this morning with another 5 in the afternoon. 10 Goldfinch were in Carinish. Around 60 Barnacle Geese also flew south over the North Ford early afternoon and 200 past over Grimsay. The Pectoral Sandpiper was still on Baleshare this afternoon. A Willow Warbler was at Claddach Baleshare this afternoon.

Barra: 4 Snow Buntings were at Borve.

South Uist: A Yellow-browed Warbler and a Blackcap were at Boisdale House. A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Carnan this morning.

Barra: 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were at Nask this morning; also 3 at Creachan, 1 at Craigston and 1 at Northbay.

Insects: 22 moths of 9 species were trapped in Carinish last night including 4 Angle Shades, 2 Red Sword-grass, a Dark Sword-grass, 2 Brindled Ochre, a Silver Y and a Gold Spot. A Painted Lady and Small Tortoiseshell were at Borve, Benbecula this moring.

15th October:

Lewis: The Wilson's Warbler was intermittently showing well in the garden opposite Cafe Sonas in Port of Ness until 17:40; also 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were present.

South Uist: A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Bornish.

Barra: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Creachan.

14th October:

Lewis: The Wilson's Warbler was seen again this afternoon although elusive in the garden opposite Cafe Sonas.

North Uist: A Pectoral Sandpiper was on Baleshare this afternoon.

South Uist: A Sooty Shearwater was seen off Ardvule this morning and 5 Bonxies flew south. A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Bornish this afternoon.

Insects: A Silver Y and a very late July Highflyer were caught last night in South Glendale whilst both 2 Red Sword-grass and an Angle Shades were nectaring on a Buddleia late last night.

13th October:

Lewis: A Wilson's Warbler is in Port of Ness opposite Cafe Solas this afternoon.

North Uist: 4 juvenile Brent Geese are at Grenitote. A Blackcap is at Langass Lodge. Wheatears were at Sollas and on Baleshare.

Benbecula: A Siberian Chiffchaff and Yellow-browed Warbler are by the Dark Island.

South Uist: A Great Skua and a Long-tailed Duck flew north at Ardvule this morning. 3 Fieldfare and a Brambling were in South Glendale.

Barra: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Ardmhor Plantation and another was at Eoligarry.

12th October:

Lewis: A Brent Goose was off Aiginish today.

North Uist: 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 9 Redwings and 2 Chiffchaff are around Loch Sandary. 3 Lapland Buntings and a Ruff are at Balranald. A Wheatear was seen at the north end of the Committee Road. A Yellow-browed Warbler, female Blackcap and 2 Goldcrst were in the small plantation at Trumisgarry this morning; also lots of Barnacle Geese heading over. A Greenland Wheatear was at Claddach Carinish today.

Benbecula: A Yellow-browed Warbler is in the garden by the Dark Island Hotel.

South Uist: A Red-breasted Flycatcher is at North Loch Eynort along with a female Blackcap, a Siskin and a few Redwings.

Barra: A Red-breasted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher and Yellow-browed Warbler at Creachan. A Yellow-browed Warbler and Wood Warbler were in Castle Bay. A Yellow-browed Warbler and Pied Flycatcher are at Nask.

11th October:

North Uist: A Lapland Bunting, Snow Bunting and 2 Ruff are at Balranald; also a couple of small flocks of Barnacle Geese south over this afternoon. 1,100+ Barnacle Geese flew south over Langass just after midday. A female Pintail is on Loch nam Feithean. A Coot was on Loch na Reivil, Hougharry and a Black-tailed Godwit was at Loch Sandary.

South Uist: Ardvule (0745 – 1120) saw southerly movement of 103 Gannets, 18 Great Northern Divers, 7 Red-throated Divers, 183 Pale-bellied Brents, 4,682 Barnacle Geese, 12 Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Long-tailed Duck plus 11 Snipe in off sea. A Wheatear was also at Ardvule and 3 Pink-footed Geese were on Bornish machair. Also 2 Swallows at Bornish. A Spotted Flycatcher was at Snishival and a Ruff was at Ormiclate.

Insects: 126 moths of 17 species were trapped in South Glandale last night including 91 Small Wainscot, 1 Smoky Wainscot, 2 Silver Y, 1 Mouse Moth, 4 Red-line Quaker and 2 Brindled Ochre as well as micros Rush Veneer, 5 Agonopterix yeatiana and 3 Caloptilia stigmatella.

10th October:

North Uist: Several flocks of Barnacle Geese (around 700+ in total) past south over Carinish late this afternoon.

Benbecula: A Black-tailed Godwits and a juvenile pale-bellied Brent Goose were in Stinky Bay. A Wheatear was on the shore at Torlum.

South Uist: A juvenile American Golden Plover was at Bornish. A Yellow-browed Warbler, Willow Warbler and 2 Blackcaps were in South Glendale. At least 1,900 Barnacle Geese over Bornish / Ardvule this afternoon as well as 46 Pale-bellied Brent, 5 Wigeon, 13 Teal, 41 Kittiwakes and an Arctic Skua. A Yellow-browed Warbler and Pied Flycatcher were at Snishival. A Pied Flycatcher was at Druidibeg. A Spotted Flycatcher was at Grogarry Lodge. 13 Black-tailed Godwits were at Ormiclate and 3 were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee.

Barra: A Barred Warbler was on Vatersay today.

9th October:

North Uist: A female Pintail and Slavonian Grebe are on Loch Sandary. An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull is hanging around the Carinish area.

8th October:

7th October:

Lewis: A Wheatear was at the Butt. A ringtail Hen Harrier was at Loch Stiapabhat. A Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, 2 Blackcaps, Spotted Flycatcher, 3 Redwings and 2 Swallows were in Port of Ness.

North Uist: A male and female Blackcap, 3 Siskins and 3 Redwings were at Langass Lodge with another male Blackcap at Langass Wood. 2 Wheatears were at Claddach Baleshare.

South Uist: 12 Redwings and a Blackcap were in South Glendale.

Barra: The Red-breasted Flycatcher is still in Ardmhor Plantation.

Insects: A Red Admiral was by Langass Lodge. 61 Small Wainscot, 2 Red-line Quaker and a Mouse Moth plus 2 Eana Penziana and an Acleris variegana were trapped in South Glendale last night. 4 Nettle-taps were in South Glendale today as well as a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly. 2 Silver Ys were at Smerclate and a Small Tortoiseshell at Garrynamonie.

Marine Sightings: A Harbour Porpoise was feeding close inshore off Baleshare this afternoon.

6th October:

Lewis: A male Ring Ouzel was at the Butt today along with a Lapland Bunting, 250 Snow Buntings, Blackcap, Wheatear and 25 Redwings. A juvenile Ring Ouzel and Yellow-browed Warbler were at Eoropie; plus 20 Redwings over. A Blackcap and 20 Redwings were at Port of Ness.

Benbecula: A juvenile pale-bellied Brent Goose is still in Stinky Bay.

South Uist: A Willow Warbler and Blackcap are in South Glendale. 3 pale-bellied Brent Geese are at Smerclate.

Barra: A Barred Warbler is in Castle Bay and 2 Yellow-browed Warblers are at Gleann. Another Yellow-browed Warbler was at Nask and the Reed Warbler was still present.

 

5th October:

Lewis: A Lapland Bunting flew south over Arnish Moor (just south of Stornoway) this morning and both a juvenile and male Hen Harrier were present.

South Uist: A male Blackcap was in South Glendale and 4 pale-bellied Brent Geese were at Ardivachar.

4th October:

Lewis: 4 Lapland Buntings and 15 Snow Buntings were at the Butt. A Barred Warbler was at Eoropie and a Whinchat was nearby. An adult Little Gull was off Tiumpan Head early afternoon when a flock of around 300 Pink-footed Geese headed south-east over the Minch. An adult male and a juvenile Hen Harrier were at Arnish Moor along with a Wheatear. Several flocks of Pink-footed Geese heading east were seen between Luirbost and Stornoway in the afternoon totalling around 5 - 600 birds and 12 Whooper Swans flew east at Luirbost this morning. A Chiffchaff and Great Tit were at Marybank, Stornoway.

South Uist: The juvenile Marsh Harrier was seen heading south over the sea at Ardvule this morning; also a Wheatear there. The Lesser Whitethroat and a Crossbill were at Snishival.

Barra: 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Reed Warbler are on the island whilst 12 Sooty Shearwaters flew south off Brevig.

Marine Sightings: 4 Risso's Dolphins were off Tiumpan Head this morning and a Minke Whale was to the north-west of there this afternoon; also several Harbour Porpoise were seen. A Humback Whale was also seen on Friday evening (see Tiumpan Head Watchers)

 

3rd October:

Lewis: Male Hen Harriers were seen along the Pentland Road (Carloway end) and at Arnish Moor this evening; also 13 Whooper Swans over Arnish. 60 Snow Buntings were at the Butt.

South Uist: 11 Red-throated Divers, 3 Great Northern Divers, 17 Pale-bellied Brent, 1 Great Skua and a Whimbrel flew south at Ardvule this morning. A female Blackcap and 30 Goldfinches were in South Glendale. 2 Lapland Buntings, 4 Ruff and 10 Black-tailed Godwits were on the machair at Kilaulay. A Willow Warbler was at Druidibeg. A Lesser Whitethroat and Chiffchaff were at Snishival. 24 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were on Ormiclate machair. A Chiffchaff was in Bornish.

Barra: 5 Yellow-browed Warblers are on the island (Brevig, North Bay, Nask, Glen and Ardveenish) and a Reed Warbler is at Skallary. A Lesser Whitethroat was also at Brevig.

Insects: Moth trapping in South Glendale produced 156 moths of 22 species which included 103 Small Wainscot, 2 Ingrailed Clay, 2 Northern Deep-brown Darts, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Beautiful Golden Y, 1 Silver Y, 4 Mouse Moths, 4 Red-line Quakers plus micro moths Rush Veneer, Udea lutealis, Acleris effractana and Acleris variegana.

2nd October:

Lewis: 125 Snow Buntings near the Butt lighthouse this morning.

South Uist: The juvenile Marsh Harrier was around Ardkenneth - Balgarva this morning; a Lapland Bunting also flew over there. The Pied Flycatcher is still at Druidibeg. 2 Siskins were at Snishival and a Chiffchaff was in Bornish. A Sooty Shearwater, 7 Great Northern Divers, 1 Black-throated Diver and 2 Black Guillemots few south off Ardvule this morning. 17 Black-tailed Godwits were on Bornish machair.

 

1st October:

Lewis: 180+ Snow Buntings were at the Butt this morning.

Benbecula: The juvenile Marsh Harrier was again at Borve, near Coot Loch this morning.

South Uist: A Pied Flycatcher was in Druidibeg Plantation.

Insects: 209 moths of 17 species were trapped in Carinish last night including 4 Dark Sword-grass and 6 Rush Veneers. 161 moths of 29 species were trapped in South Glendale including 68 Small Wainscot, 1 Smoky Wainscot, 3 Silver Y, 1 Turnip Moth, 1 Brindled Ochre, 1 Angle Shades, 1 Purple Bar and micros 8 Rush Veneer, Agonopterix ocellana, Agonopterix yeatiana and Cnephasia conspersana. On Eriskay 89 moths of 21 species were caught including 26 Red-line Quaker, Dark Sword-grass, Hedge Rustic, Grey Mountain Carpet and micros 3 Cnephasia conspersana, Caloptilia stigmatella, 2 Agonopterix yeatiana, Depressaria radiella, 3 Depressaria badiella and 3 Depressaria daucella.
