30th September:

Lewis: 3 juvenile Little Stints and a Brent Goose were at Loch Ordais.

North Uist: 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers, 3 Little Stints and around 10 Ruff were on Baleshare this afternoon.

Benbecula: 2 Sand Martins were at Borve Point.

South Uist: Birds moving south at Ardvule this morning included 288 Gannets, 110 Red-throated Divers, 15 Great Northern Divers, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 2 Pale-bellied Brent, 17 Razorbills, 23 Guillemots, 38 Auk sp., 3 Kittiwakes, a juvenile Arctic Tern, juvenile Black Tern and 6 Great Skuas. An American Golden Plover, 89 Black-tailed Godwits and 6 Ruff were on the Range at West Gernish.

Marine Sightings: 6 Bottle-nosed Dolphins swam south off Ardvule.

29th September:

Lewis: A juvenile Little Stint was at the Butt. 2 Ruff were at Loch Stiapabhat and a juvenile Marsh Harrier was there in the afternoon.

North Uist: 2 juvenile Little Stints and 43 Brent Geese were on the shore at Aird an Runair, Balranald. 2 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, 2 Ruff and a peep (probably a Little Stint) were with Golden Plover on the machair nearby. A juvenile American Golden Plover and 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were seen on Baleshare this afternoon.

South Uist: Birds moving south at Ardvule this morning included 255 Gannets, 3 Manx Shearwaters, 13 Red-throated Divers, 7 Great Northern Divers, 22 Kittiwakes, 5 Great Skuas, 1 Black Guillemot, 11 Guillemots and 8 Razorbills. 300 Brent Geese were at Smerclate.

28th September:

Lewis: 2 Little Stints were seen at Loch Ordais. A Marsh Harrier was seen near Cross Stores today. 2 Lapland Buntings were at the Butt and 5 Ruff flew south.

North Uist: A Sand Martin flew south over Carinish this morning.

South Uist: At least 46 Ruff and probably well in excess of 50 Ruff were on the Range along with 3 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers. 50+ Black-tailed Godwits and a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper were by Loch Bee. A male Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff and 2 Lesser Redpolls were at Druidibeg plantation. 34 Brent Geese, an Arctic Skua and 3 Great Skuas flew south off Ardvule this morning. A Blackcap was in South Glendale.

27th September:

North Uist: The Little Egret was at Oban Trumisgarry this morning. 2 drake American Wigeon are still on Loch Aileodair, near the Loch Portain turning. A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 13 Ruff and a Black-tailed Godwit are with Golden Plover at Borve, Berneray.

South Uist: A juvenile American Golden Plover, Pectoral Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper and 2 Ruff are onthe Range pools at West Gerinish. 13 Little Stints were on the roadside pools at Balgarva.

26th September:

Lewis: adult American Golden Plover and juvenile Ruff on the shore by Loch Shawbost (Loch Shiaboist). 10 Lapland Buntings and 2 Ruff were at Eoropie (Eoropaiah). A Swift was over North Dell

North Uist: 5 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were seen on Baleshare this morning. 2 drake American Wigeon were on the loch at Aileodair near the Loch Portain turning. A Little Egret was reported from near Clachan Sands today.

South Uist: A Yellow-browed Warbler was in South Glendale this morning. 16 Red-throated Divers, 13 Great Northern Divers and a Great Skua flew south at Ardvule this morning.

Insects: A Large Wainscot was trapped at Eochar (Iochdar) last night.

25th September:

North Uist: 2 Lapland Buntings and 3 Ruff were on Baleshare this morning.

South Uist: 2 Pink-footed Geese and a Ruff were at Boisdale. 3 Lapland Buntings were on the machair at Kilpheder. 5 Little Stints were on the South Ford.

Insects: 5 Red-line Quakers, 1 Angle Shades and an Agonopterix yeatiana were caught on Eriskay last night. In South Glendale a Brindled Ochre, 3 Angle Shades, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Eudonia angustea and 2 Acleris variegana were trapped.

24th September:

North Uist: The juvenile American Golden Plover and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper were on Baleshare today. A juvenile Cuckoo is at Langass.

South Uist: 20 Red-throated Divers, 6 Great Northern Divers, 236 Gannets, 1 Manx Shearwater, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 11 kittiwakes, 1 Arctic Skua, 1 Great Skua, 22 Razorbills and 36 Guillemots flew south at Ardvule this morning while a Purple Sandpiper present. 4 Little Stints were on the South Ford and a Sand Martin was nearby at Balgarva.

Barra: A Barred Warbler was at Glen; also 7 Yellow-browed Warblers, Garden Warbler, 5 Willow Warblers, a Grey Wagtail and a Spotted Flycatcher were on the island today.

Marine Sightings: A dead Leatherback Turtle was found on Vatersay yesterday.

23rd September:

Lewis: The juvenile / 1st winter Bonaparte's Gull is still at Garry Beach, North Tolsta.

South Uist: A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen by Hebridean Jewellery and a Little Stint was on the South Ford there.

22nd September:

Lewis: Around 15 Arctic Skuas and at least 3 Storm Petrels were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry this morning. The juvenile / 1st winter Bonaparte's Gull was at Garry Beach, North Tolsta again this evening and on the small freshwater loch until 19:00.

North Uist: A juvenile American Golden Plover and 2 Buff-breasted Sandpiper were on Baleshare today. 28 Storm Petrels were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry around midday today.

Marine Sightings: A pod of 80+ Common Dolphins were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry and at least 30 were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry early this morning.

Insects: Red Admirals were in Port of Ness and at Eoropie.

21st September:

Lewis: A juvenile Bonaparte's Gull was at Garry Beach (Traigh Ghearadha), North Tolsta this afternoon. 13 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were by Loch Branahuie.

North Uist: A Pomarine Skua was seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry. 4 Lapland Buntings were seen at Balranald.

Marine Sightings: 2 Minke Whales, at least 5 Risso's Dolphins, 6 White-sided Dolphins, Common Dolphins and Harbour Porpoise were seen off Tiumpan Head this morning.

Insects: An Angle Shades, 1 Pink-barred Sallow, 6 Red-line Quakers, 3 Rosy Rustic 2 Grey Pine Carpets, Acleris rhombana and Agonopterix ciliella were caught at Loch Eynort last night. 5 Angle Shades, 1 Pink-barred Sallow, 1 Red-line Quaker, 5 Rosy Rustic, 98 Small Wainscot, 2 Heath Rustic, 1 Beautiful Golden Y, 2 Silver Y, 1 Dark Sword-grass and single Agonopterix ciliella and Acleris variegana were trapped in South Glendale. A Peacock Butterfly was also in South Glendale today.

20th September:

Lewis: A Willow Warbler was in the lighthouse compound at the Butt this morning. A Lapland Bunting was seen on the coast at Melbost.

North Uist: A total of 6 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were on Baleshare today. A Spotted Redshank was at Vallay Strand today.

South Uist: 267 Gannets, 7 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Great Northern Divers, 9 Red-throated Divers, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Arctic Skua, 2 juvenile Arctic Terns, 11 Kittiwakes, 10 Razorbill, 1 Guillemot and a juvenile Puffin flew south at Ardvule this morning.

Barra: A single Yellow-browed Warbler was on the island today.

19th September:

Lewis: A Pomarine Skua, an Arctic Skua and a Bonxie were flew south off the Butt. A Lapland Bunting was over Galson moorland. 2 Lapland Buntings flew over the beach at Barvas.

Barra: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Brevig in the morning.

Marine Sightings: 5 Risso's Dolphins were off the Butt this morning.

 

18th September:

Lewis: 7 Lapland Buntings are still at the Butt and 3 Sooty Shearwaters flew past.

Harris: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Luskentyre this morning; a Velvet Scoter was with 150+ Common Scoters in the Sound of Taransay and 2 Arctic Terns.

North Uist: 5 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were seen on Baleshare this afternoon. A Lesser Whitethroat was at Callernish

Marine Sightings: 12 Risso's Dolphins were off the Butt this morning.

17th September:

Lewis: 7 Lapland Buntings were at the Butt. A Redwing was in Habost, Ness. 2 juvenile Hen Harriers and 2 Ruff were at Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: A male Crossbill and 7 Siskins were in Langass Wood this morning. 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were on Baleshare. An Osprey flew south over Langass and a juvenile Cuckoo was present.

South Uist: A Lapland Bunting was at Kilpheder.

Barra: The American Redstart is still in the Sycamores behind the church in Eoligarry.

Marine Sightings: At least 2 groups of Risso's Dolphins were betweem Port of Ness and the Butt this morning with at least 14 individuals involved and 6 were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry just out of Stornoway.

Insects: A Peacock butterfly was in South Glendale. Red Admirals were seen in Port of Ness and by Loch Stiapabhat. 44 moths / 13 species were trapped in South Glendale including 2 Red-line Quakers, 2 Angle Shades, 1 Brindled Ochre, 1 Black Rustic, 2 Heath Rustic, 1 Chevron and an Acleris effractana.

16th September:

Lewis: 3 Leach's Petrels and a Pomarine Skua were seen on the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today. 15 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Branahuie.

Benbecula: 44 Black-tailed Gowits and 3 Ruff were on the west side of Loch Mor. A Ruff was at Aird.

South Uist: A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was at Ormiclate. The Semipalmated Sandpiper was seen at Balgarva this afternoon. A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was on the Range with 160 Golden Plover. 9 Siskins were at North Loch Eynort. The Pied Flycatcher is still in Askernish.

Barra: The American Redstart is still at Eoligarry.

Marine Sightings: Several Common Dolphins and Harbour Porpoise were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry on either side of the Minch.

15th September:

Lewis: 28 Sooty Shearwaters past the Butt today. The American Golden Plover was by Loch Shawbost this afternoon before flying off. 28 Leach's Petrels and a juvenile Sabine's Gull were seen from the Stonorway - Ullapool ferry.

North Uist: A Buff-breasted Sandpiper, 3 Ruff and 100+ Black-tailed Godwits were on Baleshare. 2 Ruff were at Hosta and 14 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: A Great Crested Grebe and 46 Black-tailed Godwits were at Coot Loch.

South Uist: The Semipalmated Sandpiper was at Balgarva again today. A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was at Bornish. A Pied Flycatcher was at Askernish.

Barra: The American Redstart is still in the Sycamores behind the church in Eoligarry.

 

14th September:

Lewis: An adult American Golden Plover was with Golden Plover on the beach at the to the south of Loch a' Bhaile, Tolsta Chaolais today. 250 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east over Borve this afternoon. 2 Sooty Shearwaters past the Butt. An adult American Golden Plover was on the shore at Loch Shawbost. A Leach's Petrel was seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry. 20 Black-tailed Gowits were at Loch Branahuie.

North Uist: A Lapland Bunting, 6 Pintail, 49 Black-tailed Gowits and around 10 Ruff were on Baleshare this morning. 200 Pink-footed Geese dropped in on the North Ford between Carinish and Balivanich this evening.

South Uist: 100 Pink-footed Geese flew south over Askernish this afternoon. A Pectoral Sandpiper, 3 Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 2 Ruff were seen between Loch Hallan and Askernish today. 4 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were at Aird-mhicheil.

Barra: The American Redstart is still in the Sycamores behind the church at Eoligarry.

13th September:

North Uist: Around 20 Black-tailed Godwits were by Loch Sandary. 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers, 18 Ruff and 39 Black-tailed Godwits were on Baleshare this afternoon.

South Uist: The Semipalmated Sandpiper was seen again this morning at Balgarva, east of the thatched cottage. A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was on Ormiclate machair along with a Ruff. 92 Black-tailed Godwits were on Bornish machair. 30+ Redpolls were at North Loch Eynort.

Barra: The American Redstart is still present in the Sycamores behind the church at Eoligarry.

Insects: A Painted Lady was at Balranald today.

12th September:

North Uist: 2 Ruff were by Loch Sandary. 42 Black-tailed Godwits and 7 Ruff were on Baleshare. A Lesser Whitethroat was seen at Callernish.

South Uist: The juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper was again on the roadside pools at Balgarva this morning before flying off towards the South Ford. The male Velvet Scoter is now off Peninerine.

Barra: The American Redstart is still in the Sycamores behind the church at Eoligarry, viewed from the south side. A Yellow-browed Warbler is at Ardmhor plantation.

11th September:

Lewis: 20 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Branahuie today.

Benbecula: 8 Ruff were at Torlum.

South Uist: A juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper was on the roadside pools at Balgarva this morning. 35 Black-tailed Godwits were at Grogarry. A Leach's Petrel and 2 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Oban - Barra ferry. A Green Sandpiper was at Loch Fada this afternoon.

Barra: The American Redstart is still in the Sycamores behind the church at Eoligarry and veiwable from the south side.

10th September:

Benbecula: 4 Ruff are with Golden Plover at Torlum. Around 30 Black-tailed Godwits are at Griminish.

South Uist: 100 Black-tailed Godwits and 7 Ruff were at Bornish this evening. 465 Gannets, 46 Manx Shearwaters, 2 Storm Petrels, 1 Arctic Skua, 1 Great Skua and 2 Arctic Terns flew south at Ardvule this morning while 5 Golden Plover and a Purple Sandpiper came in off sea.

Barra: The American Redstart is still showing in the Sycamores behind the church at Eoligarry although elusive in the wet conditions.

Marine Sightings: 6 Bottle-nosed Dolphins were off Ardvule in the morning.

 

9th September:

Lewis: 9 Arctic Skuas, 2 Sooty Shearwaters and 3 Storm Petrels were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry off Stornoway.

North Uist: A Buff-breasted Sandpiper and Lapland Bunting were at Traigh Eachcamias, Baleshare. A Sooty Shearwater and 2 Arctic Skuas were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry.

South Uist: A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was at Frobost but flew off to the north. 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were at Ormiclate, also 2 Lapland Buntings there. 86 Black-tailed Godwits and 3 Ruff on the machair by West Loch Ollay.

Barra: The American Redstart is still in the Sycamores behind the church at Eoligarry.

Marine Sightings: 15 Harbour Porpoise and around 30 Common Dolphins were seen from the Ullapool - Stronoway ferry. 2 Risso's Dolphins and around 30 Common Dolphins were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry.

8th September:

Lewis: Sooty Shearwater and Little Gull past Gallan Head today, plus a Lapland Bunting present. A juvenile Sabine's Gull and Leach's Petrel were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry.

North Uist: 2 Leach's Petrels and a Grey Phalarope were seen from the Uig - Lochmaddy ferry this morning.

Barra: The American Redstart was showing well again today in the Sycamores behind the church in Eoligarry.

Insects: 4 Red Admirals were in a garden at Carnan today.

7th September:

South Uist: 23 Red-throated Divers, 2 Great Northern Divers, 4 Storm Petrels, 1 Arctic Tern and 14 Whimbrel flew south at Ardvule this morning.

Barra: An American Redstart was found this evening in the Sycamores behind the church at Eoligarry,

 

 

6th September:

North Uist: The Wood Sandpiper was on Loch Sandary again this morning. 3 Leach's Petrels, 46 Brent Geese and 12+ Whimbrel flew south off Aird an Runair in a 40 minute watch early this afternoon; also 13 Common Scoters and a Pomarine Skua south here in the morning. The Pectoral Sandpiper was seen at Traigh Eachcamais again this evening.

South Uist: At Ardvule this morning 4 Great Northern Divers, 4 Red-throated Divers, 128 Gannets, 32 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 2 Leach's Petrels, 12 Common Scoter, 31 Pale-bellied Brents and 8 Whimbrel flew south. Also 2 Ruff present. 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were still on Ormiclate machair along with 3 Ruff. 7 Ruff and 30 Black-tailed Godwits were at Kildonan.

3 Red Admirals were at Langass Lodge.

5th September:

Lewis: 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were 500m west of the Butt lighthouse before flying off. A Swift was also around the Butt for an hour in the morning. A Pied Flycatcher was in Port of Ness in the evening.2 Pectoral Sandpipers were on the saltmarsh at Steinish this morning. A juvenile Black Tern was seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry this afternoon. 4 Balearic Shearwaters, 4 Sooty Shearwaters, a Little Gull and Leach's Petrel past Gallan Head today.

North Uist: A Wood Sandpiper was on Loch Sandary today along with a Ruff and 27 Black-tailed Godwits. A Pectoral Sandpiper was on Baleshare.

South Uist: A male Velvet Scoter was off Aird-mhicheil this morning. A juvenile Sabine's Gull and 3 Sooty Shearwaters flew south at Ardvule this morning; also 12 Red-throated Divers, 3 Great Northern Divers, 212 Gannets, 242 Manx Shearwaters, 68 Fulmars, 2 Arctic Terns, 1 Arctic Skua, 1 Great Skua and 5 Whimbrel flew past. At least 80 Black-tailed Godwits were by Loch Tornish. 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers were on Ormiclate machair again today. A Leach's Petrel, Sooty Shearwater and an Arctic Skua past Ardvule (17:15 - 18:00). 2 Green Sandpipers were seen in the Balgarva area.

Insects: A Painted Lady was at Paible and another 2 were at Clachan Sands. A Red Admiral was at Hosta.

4th September:

South Uist: A Pectoral Sandpiper was at the south-west end of Loch Bee. At Ardvule this morning a Great Skua, Arctic Skua, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 57 Manx Shearwaters and 542 Gannets flew south while a Whimbrel was present. A Green Sandpiper was on the small pool opposite the Hebridean Jewellery turning late afternoon and 115 Grey Plover were on the South Ford. A Hudsonian Whimbrel was reported flying in off the sea at Ormiclate and then south over Bornish machair this evening; also 2 Buff-breasted Sandpipers at Ormiclate.

Insects: 2 Red Admirals were in a garden in South Glendale and 3 were at 7 Carinish.

3rd September:

South Uist: A Pectoral Sandpiper was on the Range at Kilaulay this afternoon. 2 Green Sandpipers were reported from Eochar by Hebridean Jewellery.

 

 

2nd September:

North Uist: A Lapland Bunting was at Rushgarry, Berneray this morning and 3 Common Scoters were off the west shore. 2 Ruff and around 15 Black-tailed Godwits were at Sollas. A Wood Sandpiper, 2 Ruff and a few Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Sandary. A Lapland Bunting flew over Loch Paible this morning.

Insects: 344 moths and 21 species were caught at Eochar last night including 4 Haworth's Minor and 48 Smalll Wainscots amongst others. On Eriskay 180 moths / 32 species were trapped last night including 3 Mouse Moth, 1 Scotch Annulet, 3 Neglected Rustic, 2 Northern Deep-brown Dart, 3 Agonopterix ciliella, 2 Agonopterix yeatiana, 3 Depressaria badiella, 2 Cnephasia conspersana, 1 Eana penziana, 1 Acleris effractana and 2 Acleris aspersana. In South Glendale 733 moths / 42 species were caught which including 733 Ear Moth agg., 4 Arran Carpet, 7 Neglected Rustic, 1 Small Autumnal Moth, 1 Beautiful Golden Y and micro moths Gracillaria syringella, Aspilapteryx tringipennella, Mompha locupletella, Eana penziana, Depressaria radiella, Cnephasia conspersana, Scrobipalpa samadensis, Acleris effractana, Acleris variegana, Acleris aspersana, Eudonia angustea.

1st September:

North Uist: 2 probably 3 Lapland Buntings are by the coastal car park at Balranald this morning. 2 Pectoral Sandpipers were on Baleshare at Traigh Eachcamais around midday.

South Uist: Around 150 Black-tailed Godwits and 6 Ruff were by Loch Bornish. 140 Black-tailed Godwits and 7 Ruff were at Kildonan.

Insects: 21 species of moth were trapped in Carinish last night including a Sallow and a Red-line Quaker. A Painted Lady was seen near the Balranald campsite. 263 moths and 15 species were trapped by Loch Druidibeg including 195 Ear Moths agg., 18 Heath Rustic, 15 Neglected Rustic, 5 Autumnal Rustic, 1 Pink-barred Sallow, 5 Chestnut-coloured Carpet, 1 Small Autumnal Moth, 1 Haworth's Minor and 2 Northern Deep-brown Darts. In South Glendale 142 moths / 19 species which included 84 Ear Moth agg., 3 Northern Deep-brown Darts, 1 Angle Shades, 1 Lunar Underwing, 12 Autumnal Rustics, 3 Heath Rustic, 4 Neglected Rustic, 1 Mouse Moth and 1 Pink-barred Sallow.
